Augustas Serapinas was born in Vilnius, Lithuania in 1990, and lives and works in Vilnius. He attended the Rupert Educational Program in Vilnius and completed a BA Fine Arts from the Vilnius Academy of Arts, Vilnius and The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, Copenhagen.

Serapinas’ practice is invested in recomposing socially engaged spaces, in order to foreground and problematise the assumptions that shape them. By inverting the customary functions of objects and spatiality, Serapinas toys with the possibilities of the encounter – with art and with the social relations it engenders – as a phenomenon and an opportunity.

The work of Serapinas is often marked by an intense and empathic re-appropriation and reinterpretation of the places in which it is hosted. The artist investigates the layering of stories and tales in a sort of excavation process that includes research and meetings, from which he draws the elements he creates his pieces with. Whether consisting of concealed and rediscovered frescoes, original and forgotten functions of places, removed stories, omitted people, destroyed and recovered materials, the element that make up the artist’s work contribute to forming new points of view, new perspectives on a layered, dense, permeable, open world. Serapinas’ explorations often being with the observation of a city and then move to the deeper investigation of specific place, in a process of identification which moves from the general to the detail, during which individual and collective stories are involved.
