Arnaldo Pomodoro

ENG Arnaldo Pomodoro was born in Morciano di Romagna in 1926. After being initially directed to study as a surveyor, he soon devoted himself to sculpture, creating those very unique high-reliefs that were welcomed by critics as early as the 1950s, especially in the first period, alternately. Unpublished were the materials used which included gold and silver in the first experiments and then included poorer materials such as iron, the wood, bronze and concrete. After an almost two-dimensional first period, Pomodoro decided to intervene on the geometries of solids by ripping and cutting with the cracks typical of his works, cones, spheres and cubes. In these years he elaborated an elegant contrast between the external part of his solids, composed of polished bronze, and the inside, jagged, complex and bumpy: this counterpoint became fundamental for his production and a key element for the reading of all his subsequent works. In the following years he created several works for numerous Italian squares, exasperating the dimensions of their opposites in monumental works that reached the dimensions of more than several meters. He currently lives and works in Milan.
