Ryan Sullivan

Born in 1983 in New York, NY, Sullivan received his BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design in 2005, and later worked as a studio assistant for both Laura Owens and Ross Bleckner. The artist lives and works in New York.
Sullivan’s paintings reflect his dynamic and constantly-evolving mode of abstraction, with each painting standing as a physical record of its own creation – both embodying and describing material flows and physical processes.
Built from several layers of materials such as resin, fiberglass, and epoxy, Sullivan’s works have the physicality of a rock formation or graffitied concrete wall. “The whole point of having these layers is to create this object that has a physical potential of its own,” he has explained.

Evocative and unrepeatable, Sullivan’s works have been praised for their assertion of painting's enduring critical importance and potential. Sullivan studied at the Rhode Island School of Design, Providence (RI) (2005).
